Grade 6 Added to Parkland Village School

January 11, 2023 - At their Regular Meeting on January 10, 2023, the Parkland School Division Board of Trustees approved the Attendance Area Review Recommendation for Parkland Village School Grade Reconfiguration, which will see Parkland Village School be expanded to a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school beginning this fall, in the 2023-2024 school year.

"Three things come to mind when looking at this decision," stated Board Chair Lorraine Stewart.

"The students are not moving, they are remaining. Mostly they are the remaining Grade 5's that will remain in Grade 6. Consultation this year with Parkland Village School staff and with parents, there's a positive feeling that this is the right move to make. That's not all, but that percentage was high. The 36 students* positively impacts both Parkland Village School and Prescott Learning Centre (and their space challenges)."

Rapid population growth in Spruce Grove has maxed out capacity at Prescott Learning Centre just six years after it opened in 2016.

This decision comes as a result of the Student Attendance Area Study commissioned by the Board in 2021, and conducted by a consultant in order to facilitate long-term planning and the effective use of PSD school facilities in light of the shifting demographics in Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County. This study included a number of recommendations, some of which the Board chose to explore further by gathering data and engaging with parents, students, staff and community members who would be affected by these changes.

Parkland Village School experienced a pre-pandemic high of over 200 students in 2019-20 but has shown a decline in enrolment since then with a September 30, 2022 enrolment of 157 students.

Meanwhile, the recommendation that beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, students Grades 7 - 9 who reside in the Parkland Village School attendance area are redirected to attend Woodhaven Middle School rather than Prescott Learning Centre has been postponed to the February 14, 2023 Regular Board Meeting.

*There are currently 36 students enrolled in Grade 5 at Parkland Village School for the 2022-2023 school year.
